Leatt®Testimonial

Over the drop and head first into a rock

Having had a back crash without a neck brace and slightly slipping my C1 and C2 before I always ride my downhill bike with a Leatt so it’s nice to be told by a doctor that it worked!

Springtime in Whistler isn’t a great time to ride bikes, you’re kind of waiting for the slush to go away so that you can get to the good dirt. So we went to Pemberton and decided to shuttle the local trails in Pemberton. We were setting up a rigging for a camera to slide down a rope between two trees about 30ft apart so we were hitting the same corner to small drop over and over, nothing special, just to test the camera.

I came around the corner fine, next second I was in the air over the bike, hands still on the bars, over the drop and head first into a rock – nothing I could do it all happened so quick.

I later found out that I had dislodged a boulder from the ground when my front wheel caught the top quarter of it and threw me over the bars. After laying on the floor seeing stars and different colours for about 10 minutes a couple of my friends decided to help me up because I was complaining of rib pains.

As soon as I was lifted I passed out and they let me down to the ground gently and phoned the paramedics. Apparently there was an ambulance shortage so the ambulance had to come from a different station in Lilloet, which actually took 1 hour. After one hour went by 3 female paramedics showed and did a few roadside tests with me and then had the pleasure of carrying me on a spine-board through the forest to their ambulance. After spending 5 hours on a spine board with various tests and the “emergency room handshake” I was cleared of neck and spinal injuries. My Troy Lee D3 helmet was in tatters and despite the 3 week concussion, I would say it definitely saved my life. The female doctor in Whistler hospital said that it is hard to test the effectiveness of a neck brace because you cannot replicate crashes with and without them and she was confident that in this instance, due to the mechanism of my crash, that the neck brace had saved my neck from serious injury. The doctor then asked what brand I used because they like to recommend certain brands over others to patients. So from me a big thank you for doing a great job in looking after me when I get things wrong!
