Instantly I was sent into a state of shock
I came off the bike in the opposite direction and smashed head first straight into a thick tree
On the 6th of July 2014, I was involved in a mountain biking accident that resulted in me suffering from a broken back in three places. As I began my race run in Beerburrum, Queensland, I felt that I had a good run ahead of me. I had gotten all of my lines linked together and was confident that I could do better than my 18th place qualifying run. I set off down the track keeping a clear mind of all my lines and riding properly. As I came over one of the last rock gardens I tried to keep my speed through a corner. My tires slipped out as I went through the corner and as my bike went to the left of the track I now wish that I had followed it but I didn’t. Instead I came off the bike in the opposite direction and smashed head first straight into a thick tree. Spectators of the race that I talked to at a later date had told me that the 2 foot thick tree had been swaying after I had hit it. Instantly I was sent into a state of shock. I panicked as I frantically checked to make sure I could still move all of my limbs as I layed there with extreme pain in my chest and back area. As medical assistance scrambled to help me I could hear various people saying, “Thank god he had his neck brace on”. I feel that my use of the Leatt Moto GPX neck brace had hugely decreased my chance of sustaining further spinal injuries. I count myself lucky that I had decided to wear my neck brace that day, although I did sustain fractures to my back in T4, T5 and T6. My neck brace ensured that I did not sustain fractures in my neck. As I sat in my chair for the next three weeks I thought back to what could have happened if I had not been wearing all the appropriate safety gear.
Thank you Leatt for making a product that ended up saving my life.
