Freewheelin’ – Get Winter Ready with Leatt’s DBX 5.0 All-Mountain Gear

“Overall, on first inspection, Leatt ain’t messing around with the DBX 5.0. From first feel and check of the details like stitching and zippers, you can tell it’s winter-ready – for even the harshest of weather conditions.”

Freewheelin recently tested our DBX 5.0 All-Mountain gear and did a review feature.

The 5.0 All-Mountain gear – jacket, jersey and shorts – offer Leatt’s highest level of coverage in their outerwear line and is finished off with a dirt, water, and stain resistant fabric coating to stay fresh even after the toughest of weather conditions. The DBX 5.0 is available in three different colours, namely ink, ruby, and black – with minimal logo branding and reflective printing for better night visibility on some.”

Leatt DBX 5.0 All-Mountain Jacket

“Both the jacket and the shorts are made from a HydraDri four-way stretch material. HydraDri is a new a three-layer fabric, developed exclusively by Leatt, that offers maximum comfort due to its flexibility, but also has top-end 30.000mm/23.000g/m² waterproof/breathable properties. Improving their jackets over previous models, Leatt have worked to provide a more tailored-fit across the arms and chest that ‘works with you’ when riding.”

“Leatt’s Magnetic Hood System is designed to keep things in check on the bumpiest rides.”

“The DBX 5.0 jacket design includes a new Magnetic Hood System to keep the fixed hood from flapping around during rides. This unique design is made up of four magnets. Three are sewn in the jacket (between the shoulders, at the back and on top of the hood, close to the visor panel), and one additional magnet with adhesive tape can be stuck to the helmet.

Leatt say, the Magnetic Hood System gives you a couple of different options for use. You can either fold the hood back and out of the way when not needed, keep it in place while riding or fix the hood securely to your helmet so that it stays fixed on your head, even when riding at high speed, which should come as a welcome addition to many on wet winter rides.

One instantly noticeable trick feature of the jacket is the two monster-sized pockets across the chest area. Fitted with double-ended waterproof zippers, you can easily store a set of goggles in there, or simply toggle the zips to aid venting.”

“The shoulders have a rubbery-grippy pad to help keep backpacks in from slipping. The pads are also on the elbows to aid wear and tear. Additional features include storm cuffs at the wrist, rear zip-able vents, lift-pass pocket on the left arm and a microfibre cloth for cleaning lenses is built into the right pocket. Other jacket options include the soft-shell DBX 4.0 and the lightweight DBX 2.0.”

Leatt DBX 5.0 All-Mountain Shorts

“As with the jacket, the DBX 5.0 shorts are made from the HydraDri four-way stretch material. The three-layer fabric is designed to stretch and move with you, but at the same time give those waterproof and breathable properties. The shorts are a tailored fit with a seamless hard-wearing seat (bum!) that moves freely on the bike. The knees are also pre-curved to prevent any snagging on knee pads. The back of the shorts feature two full-length zippers that can be opened for ventilation. However, there is no inner mesh, so make sure you ain’t going commando on the group ride if you’re in the need for a bit of extra cooling.

There is waterproof pocket on each leg that’s plenty big enough to stash the essentials in there. Again, like the jacket, all zips are waterproof – including the fly. Adjustable cuffs on the hips allow you to customise the fit, while a grippy inner waist liner will stop  the jersey from riding out.”

Leatt DBX 5.0 All-Mountain Jersey

“The all-weather DBX 5.0 jersey completes the gear set with Windblock arms, chest and sides, yet the back is completely breathable with a moisture-wicking material. Like the jacket, the shoulders have a rubbery-grippy pad to help keep backpacks in from slipping. The pads are also on the elbows to aid wear and tear. The jersey is neck brace compatible too.

Initial Impressions

“Overall, on first inspection, Leatt ain’t messing around with the DBX 5.0. From first feel and check of the details like stitching and zippers, you can tell it’s winter-ready – for even the harshest of weather conditions,” they concluded.
